UtilizationWith the utilization of both behavioral and cognitive strategies, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy aims to address the ways in which one's cognitions shape their behaviors and emotions.
Cognitive- Behavioral Therapy is based off of the research of both Donald Meichenbaum and Albert Ellis , as well as Aaron Beck. CBT encaptures a variety of treatments that focuses on the belief that thoughts are what determines one's feelings and behaviors, not external/ environmental conditions. |
Behavior Activation Therapy (BAT) |
Purpose: Conducted to increase one's level of activity on a frequent basis so that in turn feelings such as depression, low energy, and withdrawn emotions are progressively diminished.
Example: A client is instructed to track the time, mileage, and amount of calories burned after completing a daily run either outside in their neighborhood or indoors on their treadmill. |
Habit Reversal Training (HRT) |
Purpose: Utilized to support one in developing self-awareness in regards to their tics when faced with stressful situations. Through HRT one is able to recognize their tics before they occur, self-monitor their behaviors, and in turn utilize effective relaxation techniques, as well as positive replacement behaviors, to extinguish the undesired tic. Example: A client engages in self-injurious behaviors such as biting and scratching themselves when faced with social instances perceived to be overwhelming and uncomfortable (large crowds, loud and continuous noises, tiny spaces with others). |
